Yesterday I received an email from Progress Energy with Subject “Get $25 from Progress Energy. Join EnergyWise today”. So, I decided to checkout the deal.

What is EnergyWise?
EnergyWise is a new, voluntary residential program created to temporarily reduce power consumption during periods of peak energy demand. It was designed based on similar successful programs that have been used in other parts of the country for many years, but the local program has been customized for the energy usage patterns in our area.
Won’t it impact my comfort?
Energy Wise is designed to cycle the air conditioner’s compressor off and on at 10-15 minute intervals, not to turn it completely off. Your system’s fan will continue to operate normally.
For your convenience, EnergyWise will not be activated on weekends or holidays, except in the event of a system emergency. PLUS, you may choose up to two days per summer season to override the cycling of your air conditioner.
Florida Customers Save upto $145
In FAQ ( highlighted above) said they have used in other parts of the country. So, I searched to get more details on Florida where ProgressEnergy operates. Looks like customers in Florida can get upto $145 credit for using EnergyWise.
So, I was wondering why NC customers can receive ONLY $25 credit, where as Florida customers can receive upto $145?
Other States in US
Progress Energy operates in Florida and North Carolina. Utilities providers in your area might have similar program, that can save lot of money. Check out the with your Electricity provider to see if they offer similar saving options and consider enrolling in the program.
If the credit were $50+ I will not be having a debate to enroll, but for $25 I’m still considering my if its worth.

What, if any, negative effects could this program have on my central air conditioning system?
The incentive should be $100/year. Especially since an “event” can last up to 4-hours during the hottest part of the day. Automatic cycling the A/C on and off in 10-15 minute intervals could have a negative affect on the unit and significantly raise the temp in the home. I can save much more money than $25/year by controlling my own thermostat.
Right now it is 87 degrees in my home. I had my a/c guy check it out. My system is fine except for the energy wise box. I have been waiting for two days for Progress Energy to show up. This device has somehow stopped the air from working. All for $25. Dont bother. It helps Progress make more money.
Florida Homeowner. I just had my Engerywise box reactivated. I have started my Green Home Improvement Plan (Phase I) by replacing my electric water heater with a 80 gallon solar water heater. The water temperature is awesome. I also have an commercial attic fan and kvar box. Just replacing my electric water heater it reduce my bill by $83.00! The Engerywise box saves me about $12.25 a month. To me any amount saved is a good amount. My dream is to get totally off the grid.
Do I need to be at home if I sign up for Energy Wise Home?or Do I need to make an appointment?
@Teresita – I filled out the form, they came and installed it on my exterior wall (near AC Fan Unit). You don’t have to be home.
We would like to partake in this program.
