Vonage iPhone App to Call India – $0.07 per minute

October 5, 2009 · Filed Under News Bits · Comment

World Calling plan had vonage free calls to India, but we have to use the landline. People around the net, started talking about calling India using iPhone or blackberry using same plan and some were considering Lingo, which offers plan to call from Cell Phone to India for free. ( It comes with 2 years contract)

Apple approved Vonage iPhone app, that will allow calls to India for 7 cents per minute. Reliance India Call and AirTel Call home has the same deal, but Vonage iPhone app uses Wi-Fi, so your Cell Phone minutes will not be affected.

This is very cool feature. Using Reliance and Airtel will use the cell phone minutes, but not the case with Vonage. I haven’t tried it yet, but planning to give it a try.

It would be nice to make free calls to India using Voip from iPhone that includes option to use World Calling Plan. But, this is a good start for Vonage.

Update on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

October 3, 2009 · Filed Under News Bits · Comment

Although President Obama has put off an immigration overhaul until next year, the federal agency in charge of approving visas is planning ahead for the possibility of giving legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, the agency’s director said Thursday.

We are under way to prepare for that,” Alejandro Mayorkas, the director of the agency, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, said in an interview. Mr. Obama has told immigration officials that a legalization program would be part of legislation the White House would propose, said Mr. Mayorkas, who became director in August. The agency’s goal, he said, is to be ready to expand rapidly to handle the gigantic increase in visa applications it would face if the legislation, known as comprehensive immigration reform, passed Congress. Change Ceiling Fan Rotation. Save Dollars

October 1, 2009 · Filed Under Save Dollars · Comment

cieling fan energyIn the summer, use the ceiling fan in the counter-clockwise (Forward) direction. While standing directly under the ceiling fan you should feel a cool breeze. This will circulate the cool air throughout the room to ensure your comfort.

In the winter, reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise(Reverse) direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space. You can save lots of money on your heating bill when you reverse the ceiling fan direction in the winter.

Remember to adjust your thermostat when using your ceiling fan. In summer set the thermostat temperature from 84 to 80F and with Ceiling turned on, room temperature will be around 79 – 75F.

During Winter, set the thermostat to 67 to 69F and Ceiling Fan, it should feel like 70 to 72F.

How to Waive Dish Network Programming Access Fee

September 25, 2009 · Filed Under Personal Finance · Comment

I called Dish Network to see if there is a way to reduce the monthly bill. I told Customer Service Rep about my pleased I was with Dish and Customer service so far and I certainly like to stay with Dish Network, but I wanted to know if there is way to lower my monthly bill.

Program Access Fee Waived

I was transferred to Account Specialist and after looking over the account, he decided to waive the program access fee of $5.99 which I was paying every month. Dish Network requires their Receiver/DVR to be connected to landline phone connection. But, I was using Vonage as my landline. So, I had to pay $5.99 program access fee for last 3 years.

Now, I’m happy to get rid of that fee. I read in many forums about people asking Dish Network to play DirecTv card with them. I wanted to give it a try using the loyal customer card and it worked. Since, I was enrolled in Club Dish, which gives $5 monthly discount for referring a customer.

Other good thing was the program access fee is waived permanently. It was not for just 10 or 12 months. So, as long as I stay with Dish Network I pay $5.99 less in the monthly bill.

Join EnergyWise. Save $25 on Progress Energy Bill

September 24, 2009 · Filed Under Personal Finance · 1 Comment

Yesterday I received an email from Progress Energy with Subject “Get $25 from Progress Energy. Join EnergyWise today”. So, I decided to checkout the deal.

Energy Wise Progress Energy

What is EnergyWise?

EnergyWise is a new, voluntary residential program created to temporarily reduce power consumption during periods of peak energy demand. It was designed based on similar successful programs that have been used in other parts of the country for many years, but the local program has been customized for the energy usage patterns in our area.

Won’t it impact my comfort?

Energy Wise is designed to cycle the air conditioner’s compressor off and on at 10-15 minute intervals, not to turn it completely off.  Your system’s fan will continue to operate normally.

For your convenience, EnergyWise will not be activated on weekends or holidays, except in the event of a system emergency. PLUS, you may choose up to two days per summer season to override the cycling of your air conditioner.

Florida Customers Save upto $145

In FAQ ( highlighted above) said they have used in other parts of the country. So, I searched to get more details on Florida where ProgressEnergy operates. Looks like customers in Florida can get upto $145 credit for using EnergyWise.

So, I was wondering why NC customers can receive ONLY $25 credit, where as Florida customers can receive upto $145?

Other States in US

Progress Energy operates in Florida and North Carolina. Utilities providers in your area might have similar program, that can save lot of money. Check out the with your Electricity provider to see if they offer similar saving options and consider enrolling in the program.

If the credit were $50+ I will not be having a debate to enroll, but for $25 I’m still considering my if its worth.
